With hazel eyes, loose brunette curls, a few smudges of engine grease and the nicest smile you'll see this side of the 'verse, Kaylee is nothing short of adorable. She'd be attractive without her bright personality, but with it, she's charismatic and compelling, a bouncing bundle of tomboyish cuteness. She's not beautiful, like Inara, but she's definitely pretty, in a wholesome, girl-next-door sorta way.
On ship, she generally wears overalls and jumpsuits, but never without a touch of bright color or cuteness, usually added by Kaylee herself in the form of an imbrodered teddy bear, or a floral print. She has, however, been known to dress up. She loves dresses and frills, and when given the chance, cleans up quite nicely, even if it only lasts one night.
11. Personality: For Kaylee, the glass isn't just half-full. It's made of crystal and half-full of sweet, refreshin' lemonade. Kind, friendly, and ever-optimistic, Kaylee wears her heart on her sleeve, and it’s the purest heart one the ship. Not that she’s entirely pure herself, she’s mighty frisky, openly talking about sex, approving of all of the mischief the crew gets into, and brewing her very own Moonshine in the engine of the ship.
Though she always manages to find the good in things, she’s easily upset and frustrated, especially when things happen to people she loves – and Serenity counts there. As far as Kaylee’s concerned, Serenity’s a living, breathing entity. She’s just made of metal is all. But Kaylee’s always thought that of machines. She talks to them, understands them, and they talk back. She never learned it; it just comes natural to her.
Apart from her mechanical aptitude, though, Kaylee brings a certain light to the ship. Even if it’s only painting flowers on the walls or baking protein cakes, she gives everyone a bit of joy that a lot of people have forgotten in her time. And she brings that wherever she goes, her smile bringing light to even the darkest rooms.
Even if her beloved Cap’n has trouble seeing that she’s both a girl, and a mechanic, she very much is, and nothing’s going to change that. She’ll be covered in engine grease one day, and daydreaming about frilly pink dresses the next. It’s just the way Kaylee is, and she wouldn’t give it up for the world.
12. Background:
Kaylee was born on a ranch, raised on a ranch, and spent most of her childhood scrapin’ for parts at the junkyard, in between helping her mama cook and sew, doing her hair, and, once she got a bit older, chasing after boys. It was, ironically enough, one of these boys that got her a job as mechanic on Serenity, a Firefly class starship.
She first met her Cap’n pressed against the wall with Bester, the current mechanic of Serenity. He claimed the ship was unfixable. Kaylee quickly proved him wrong, explaining and fixing the problem (once she got her clothes back on, that is). That was the day Malcom Renyolds found himself with a new mechanic, Bester found himself out of the job, and Kaylee found herself on a pretty ole ship, ready for adventures in space.
And adventures she got. Though she never really got involved too much with the fightin’ (and didn’t want to – machines were her specialty, but not the shootin’ kind.), it didn’t mean she wasn’t mixed up in the hijinks of the Serenity crew. But that was fine with her, even if she did get shot and the Cap’n could be a mean ole grump. The crew was her family, and Serenity was her baby, and that was all there was to it.
13. Weaknesses: Dependant, physically weak, easily upset. She pretty much breaks down when put in the middle of a fight. Innocent, in a way. A little foolish.
14. Strengths: Ever optimistic and energetic, creative, sweet, intelligent, and very talented with a wrench. She always seems to be able to cheer people up.
15. Likes: Anything shiny or pretty, Serenity, machines, people, her entire crew, mischief, flirting, gossip, shopping, getting dirty, space, dressing up, good food, strawberries (fresh fruit is rare in her time.)
16. Dislikes: Mean people, fighting, getting kidnapped, death…and that’s about it. She can find good in pretty much anything.
17. Talents and Hobbies: She’s a darn good cook, seamstress, and salesperson, and handy with a paintbrush. But of course, the most extraordinary thing about Kaylee is her skills with machines. She’s got an inborn talent. She loves them, understands them, and takes care of them. Creatively, too. She talks the talk, but it’s less technobabble and more like a car mechanic talking about a car they really love, or a parent talking about a sick child. If there’s something wrong with something mechanical, she’s your go-to girl.
